In this Art Deco inspired Japanese Maple leaf range of vases, Russell has used a minimalist approach when decorating to enhance the simplicity of the shape and form of each vase. The intention was to create a range of elegant ceramics inspired by Japanese Art Deco design principles. All vases in this range are glazed in a single ‘monochrome’ colour, which enhances the real Japanese Maple leaf decoration. The creative challenge was to unite classic Art Deco design with the elements that give these pieces life; in particular the gentle flowing curves which create soft changes in tone and the careful placing of each individual Japanese Maple leaf.
This vase was made using a smooth white earthenware clay body hand thrown on the potter's wheel and finished in a clear glaze with real Japanese Maple leaf decoration overlaid in black, which by the resist method exposes the colour of the white clay beneath each leaf. The clear through to white clay glaze colour and contrasting black decoration, in combination with this vessels flowing curvaceous lines, gives a pleasing Japanese Art Deco appearance that would suit most interiors and make an attractive focal point to any room. The timeless Art Deco style of this piece means it will be just as attractive and fresh in 100 years time as it is now. This particular item is a fine example of Russell's wheel thrown pottery showing well his natural, intuitive appreciation for shape and form.

Founded by the British ceramic design team Russell and Malcom Akerman the Echo Of Deco studio is a contemporary ceramic studio specialising in designing and individually handmaking original ceramic objects inspired by the classic Art Deco style. We have many collectors in Canada, America and Europe as well as all over the UK, and our work has been featured in various leading magazines.
All our work is traditionally hand made in very small numbers and only by ourselves at our studio pottery in the UK. Echo Of Deco is naturally becoming well known for its artistic quality & originality in design, and there is little doubt that these wonderful pieces will become very collectable and increasingly sought after.
